History & Heritage Of Temecula, California

The word “Temecula” comes from the Indian word “Temecunga.” The first part of this word, “temet” means sun, and “ngna” translates to “place of.”

It was the Spanish who manipulated the spelling of the word so that now it literally means, “Where the sun breaks through the mist.”

With such a beautifully poetic namesake, it is obvious that this region is special. In fact, Temecula, CA is the only Californian city to keep its historical Indian name.

temecula Temecula’s first commercial vineyard was planted by Vincenzo Cilurzo in 1968. Less than 20 years later, eight different wineries were in operation.

Today Temecula Valley is known as the premium wine region in Southern California. Temecula has been growing rapidly since it was officially incorporated in 1989.

A very young city, the population of Temecula, CA is currently sitting around 100 000 and is host to a number of tourists each year. In spite of its growth and modernization, Temecula still prides itself on its past.

Old Town Temecula - Where The Old West Once Was

In an effort to preserve the history that Temecula is so proud of, the city features a restored, Old West town. Tourists are delighted with this quaint spot which features antique dealers and a farmer’s market. The town is comprised of rustic buildings meant to recapture the west in the late 19th century. There are art galleries and boutiques so that people with varied interests can all find something to enjoy here.
